With  gas prices going thru the roof, a recession looming and the mortage crisis, the average Alabamian is having a very hard time.  I saw Rep. John Rogers on Fox stating that a repeal of the tax on food would really help people out.  I have never agreed with Mr. Rogers on anything that I could understand him saying. However, I have to agree with him on this issue.  With Wal*Mart  and other retail grocerers charging  $4.99 per gallon of milk, not to mention the rising prices of other food items, food has started to become a luxury that not all people can afford. Even  a temporary repeal of the food tax would help families. We all have to eat, and drive to work. The problem is how to recoupe the loss of revenue  of repealing the food tax . I find it hard to believe that  the  leaders of the State of Alabama cannot  bring the issue up for debate and come up with something.

Face it people, this is an issue that touches everyone, the wealthy have to eat an use gas just like the poor. This issue crosses all of the socio economic lines and I feel that if the leaders in our state would make an attempt to ease the burdon on the people, perhaps just perhaps there would be confidence that the leaders of this state really do care and can feel the pain of the average Alabamian.

 Whay say you?

I agree wholeheartedly! It's immoral to tax the food in the poorest of families, they have the right to put every penny they have on their dinner table without having to pay the government for the privilege. Also, noteably, the Federal Government won't allow food stamp dollars to be taxed!! Let's all pray that this issue crosses it's final hurdle by May 19, 2008!

The other part is that it removes the deduction on state tax forms of your federal taxes paid. If you work you pay a lot more federal income tax than you pay on food.
