Larry Langford wants to rename the Birmingham Airport after Civil Rights Leader Fred Shuttlesworth. It's either a good idea or a bad one. What do you think?

Would you like to see the Birmingham International Airport renamed civil rights leader Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth?

Leave a comment on what you think about renaming the airport. Your comment could make it onto FOX6 News.

I think Mayor Langford has good intentions and some good ideas but this one is a little too far fetched for me. I have never been an air passenger so I am not farmiliar with the names of the smaller airports in the country,,but I cant recall any being named after many people. Mr Shuttlesworth has enough sites and streets named for him as does Richard Arrington..I say leave the name alone. Mr Langford and all other municipla leaders need to start focusing more... a lot more.. on the crime problem especially drug related and copper thefts. I really think if the drug criminals were dealt with properly and forcefully most of the theft and murder problems would take care of theirselves. But hey I guess they are stimulating the economy..no lack of work for the metal recyclers, heating and air companys

I am afraid the time is coming near that the public will take the law into their own hands to protect their lives and property.

No, I don't agree with a name change for the Birmingham Airport. Fred Shuttlesworth did not have anything to do with the opening nor the running of the Airport. Larry Langford is always involved in some kind of stupid gimmick. If Larry Langford is not lining his pockets he is doing stupid things so that he can make a name for himself. Ha!! Ha!!

While Larry Langford is spending all of this time on meaningless shananigans, I beleive he should be looking for answers to get the county out of debt. This guy is losing a little bit more of his mind day by day. What is going to attempt to change next? Maybe changing the name of the BJCC to the Rosa Parks Arena. Maybe I just gave him an idea. Sorry about that.

No, but not because I feel this man doesn't deserve to be recognized, but because it waters down his name.

Look at how many streets and avenues have been named after Dr. King. He deserves the tribute, but MLK Boulevard is the last place you want to be at 2am, no matter what American city you are in.

When you hear the name "Martin Luther King" you should think of things like peace, equality, unity, and justice. Instead we think of little green signs with white letters, because that is where we see the name most.

If in the course of a man's life his contributions to society excel in such a way as to deserve special recognition, give it, but make it specific. If Birmingham wants to recognize Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, fine, build another monument or establish a scholarship program in his name.

Don't just throw it around and water it down. Let's remember who he was, not what airport, hospital, street, or income tax service we saw his name on.

The Birmingham Airport should NOT be renamed for Fred Shuttlesworth, as he had nothing to do with the opening nor, the running of the Airport.
It doesn't take much history searching to find that the name should belong to Glenn Edmund Messer. He was the person who built and operated the first airfield in Birmingham, which later became known as The Birmingham Municipal Airport. He was an avation pioneer, who maintained various aircraft business in Birmingham. Messer died in 1995 in Birmingham.

I think the Birmingham Airport should be renamed in honor and memory of Alabama's fallen heroes who served in the military and law enforcement. Every day, men and women from all walks of life are giving their lives to protect our lives and freedoms. It should be named as a "Memorial" airport, instead of an international airport.

Just leave the name alone. Or name it after me. It makes about as much sense as naming it after anyone else.

I like Martin's point about watering down the name. Too true, especially with the "MLK Blvd" thing. Why do we honor a great American like Dr. King with some of the nastiest stretches of road in every American city?

Birmingham International Airport. It has a nice ring to it.

why would you want to change the name of the airport every body that flies into the BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT knows what airport they are flying into. Who in the world knows who Fred Shuttleworth is i don't. Langford just wants to change every thing because he thinks that he is helping the city of Birmingham. All of the African americans are behind him but me being a white person thinks he is the dumbest person that you can find. I bet you that i could be a better mayor than larry. This is also the same person who wants a Dome stadium in Birmingham. And also wants to bring the Olympics to Alabama. Pretty much i think why can't we just leave the airport the way it is so that everybody knows were they are flying into. LARRY is an IDIOT

I said yesterday - before I heard the name of the person Langford wanted to name the airport after - that I like the name as it already is and don't want it changed for anyone. I still hold that position now that I know it's Shuttlesworth. Sure, he is a great civil rights leader, but why the airport? Why not the Civil Rights Institute? He has nothing to do with the airport and I think it's just a tactic by Langford to redirect attention from all the things he should be doing but isn't.

I do fear this might turn into a racial issue where those who don't support the name change will be accused of being anti-civil rights or anti-black people. I do hope that those who don't want the name change will not feel pressured into acting like they do just because it's potentially a hot button.

I don't believe we need to name our airport after a black hate group founder. Our airport deserves a better name than that. If Larry Langford wants to rename the Birmingham International Airport, then rename it after someone who deserves the honor.

Let's by all means name SOMETHING after Rev. Shuttlesworth. Let that something NOT be the airport. That makes no sense.

I agree that if it is named for anyone it should be someone that has had SOMETHING to do with the airport/aviation in Birmingham and that would be Glenn Messer. BTW...isn't it already the Seibels/Bryan Airport??

What a stupid idea from a very stupid con artist and thief. Why not just go ahead and name it Crazy Larry International. I say carry his butt to the BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT with a one way ticket to another planet which is where his brain is most of the time.
