How will the City of Birmingham save money by allowing employees to go to a 4 day work week??
It won't! It will cut down on traffic because not all city employees will be going to work everyday, but the plan is for all city services to be maintained at the same level and city hall to be open as usual 5 days a week. Where's the savings? The employees may save on gas....but if they have children, they'll pay out more in childcare..if they can find after hours childcare.
It's funny, but when Mr. Langford was on the county commission...a committee of county employees requested this very action. The answer from Mr. Langford to their petition was a resounding NO! It wouldn't benefit the county. So how does it benefit the city now?
Perhaps it is by extending the hours that some city services will be available to the public? Maybe, but doesn't that mean that city buildings will also be open longer...power, water, etc...will keep being used and the bills for longer hours accumulating.
