Anything that I say here is sure to draw the ire of many Tide fans...  This comes on the heels of Jimmy Johns' arrest for drugs.

But, what gives?  I thought Saban was the answer to all the teams woes.  I thought that he would instill pride and discipline in a program that was suffering from lack of leadership.  I've lost count of the number of Tide players arrested and/or detained for infractions of varying magnitudes.

I know many will say something to the affect of "he can't be there all the time" and "he can't help what they're doing in their own time".  I say baloney.  If he had truly instlled pride and discipline into the team, they'd want to do the right thing even when no one was watching.  Apparently in this case, someone was watching.

I was one to give Saban the benefit of the doubt.  Things take time.  He's had over a year and thus far has not, in my opinion, made very much - if any - positive impact on the team.  I guess he has the team preparing for their future as pro football players.

FB- I'm sure in about 2.5 seconds, a Tide fan is going to come through here in a crimson fury to rationalize all of this, and trust me, I'll be patiently waiting....

Saban was paid money to win football games. Building character had nothing to do with it. If it had anything to do with character, Sly Croom, a hometown Tuscaloosa man, loyal and fit for the job, would have been given the opportunity and trust me, he would have taken the job for way less than Saban would have even considered.

It's about winning- nothing more and nothing less. And from what I can see, the court system and police officers in Tuscaloosa have about 5 or 6 up on the football team.....

And btw- I'll be doubled over laughing once more when Croom and his Mississippi boys beat Bama again this year......yeah, they beat us, too, but poetic justice is so sweet.....LOL!

Katie, you're absolutely right. The whole pride and discipline thing was a smoke screen. I thought they were insane for not selecting Croom. He's a stand-up guy in my book. And, yeah, I'm waiting for the Crimson Fury to flood my post.

I come in PEACE....Ha,ha.I bring no fury lol.You guys(and lady) have good points and I cant argue with any of it.Croom would have been great and would have done good things at Bama but thats out of my hands.I respect him alot and the passion he shows for the game is that of a great coach and person if you noticed how emotional he was to his players after they beat Auburn & Alabama.I only have one thing to say about this problem and Im sure you will agree with me.The pride and discipline needs to start being instilled in them by their parents. When the coach gets them he faces an up hill battle because they are 18 or 19 years old and by then the criminal ways have long begun.I hope he(Saban)can get things turned around for the better but I dont think Croom,Tuberville or anyone else could have made any difference In what some of these players do.IT STARTS AT HOME.Maybe thats just my way way of thinking but anyway, Peace fargingbastige and Katie.

That's right, it does start at home. If they were hoodlum's on the street's, why do you people expect any difference in college? As far as what Mr.Saban is getting paid, all I see is jealousy because your team does'nt have a coach worth that much.

Crimsonartist- I can appreciate your coming in peace and I certainly agree with your comment. It does start at home, but on the other hand, everyone doesn't have that strong home-base that would be ideal. So what about those people? Most of them play sports or some other extra-curricular activity where their coach/sponsor becomes their mentor. To be honest, Saban didn't like Johns too well anyway, so I would be willing to bet that there wasn't a great relationship fostered there. Now mind you, I know nothing about this person or Saban- I'm just making a generalization. I agree that it does start at home, but what about those people who have no home to begin with? But anyway, your peace is appreciated, as well as your logic.

Janny- I could care less about what Saban or Tuberville is paid. I simply made an observation. And jealousy DOESN'T motivate me at all!! Toodles!!!!

Thanks Katie.I wish all kids could be raised in a perfect household and a perfect world but it just doesnt happen that way. This is happening all over the country not just U of A ,its just something for the AU & UA fans to pick at each other about and im mature enough to take it that way.I know that some kids are raised by one parent homes and its hard for them to get the guidence they need but its even harder for a coach to steer them right when they are almost grown. They have to take some responsability of their own at times.I agree that JJ and Saban were not on good terms but how do you disapline those that need it?Im not a coach or anything so its hard for me to say but I would bet that awarding them is not an option.

Good point crimsonartist - excellent counterpoints, Katie. Here's the bottom line: we all have choices and we all have decisions to make. We're all individuals.

Maybe the guy didn't "get it at home". But often I see kids who do "get it at home" have some of the same issues in their late teens and early twenties, so that rationale doesn't hold a lot of water with me. Likewise, despite how one is raised or what they do or do not get at home, they soon should be able to recognize good from bad; right from wrong. I agree that as people (kids, in this case) get older, it is more difficult to deal with them and thier issues.

But, the fact remains that they have to make the decisions - they can choose to follow someone who sets the right example or they can cjhoose the same old wrong path - then try to play on the sympathy of others because "they had a rough childhood".

Thanks for coming in peace. I will always appreciate a debate and an opposing view. I may not always agree with it, but I appreciate the fact that we have this opportunity to freely voice opinions.

For the record, I don't think any coaches are worth what they're paid in college sports - or any other level for that matter. I think we (collectively) have our prioties messed up. Competent teachers (not administrators, coaches, etc.) should be the ones making a few extra bucks. They are the ones truly doing the job of shaping our youth (outside the home and church).
