I've mentioned in responding to another question that there are churches whose members act as if they are truly in charge of the spiritual condition in the B'ham area.  What is going to happen in Heaven when they get to Heaven and discover the presence of those whom they themselves would have condemned?  What are they going to do with the fact that God is in control?

It would make excellent Pythonesque satire to examine their options.  Would they swagger up to God's throne and confront Him with Bible verses ?  Threaten to walk out of Heaven . . . where are they going to go . . . The Other Place, I suppose . . . if God doesn't kick those so-and-so's out?

One thing we Christians need to remember is that we are NOT the potter - we are the clay.

A few years ago, at the place where I was working at the time, in a conversation with a co-worker I said ". . . God is going to do something . . ." about a problem we were discussing.  Well, my supervisor, who went to one of these "We're in charge" churches, called me into her office and yelled, "LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING!!!  GOD DOESN'T OWE YOU ANYTHING EXCEPT FOOD, CLOTHING AND SHELTER, AND YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO RELY ON HIM FOR ANYTHING ELSE!!!!"  Can you imagine being chewed out for having faith!!

Your supervisor was wrong. God doesn't owe you food, clothing, or shelter either. God owes no one anything.

If you want to get technical, we could mention "the wages of sin are death". As we are all sinners, God owes us death.

I for one don't mind that he hasn't paid me yet.

Like it or not God left us on our own. Free will could not exist if God interfered.

You're right, she should have kept her mouth shut OR they should have put a sign in that department, "Strict fundamentalism of Christian origin allowed." Oh well, I hate to tell her, but unless she has nail scars in her hands, she isn't qualified to make such decisions, anyway.

Your right that God doesn't owe us anything but God did not just leave us on our own. Just because someone uses their free will to do wrong doesn't mean that God won't right an injustice.

Jesus said Ask and you shall receive.

The Lord likes nothing better than to help his faithful.

But according to this woman, we Christians have no right to ask God for anything. Oh well, that was years ago and is no longer relevant.

Or is it? My question is: Who died and left certain churches or individuals in charge? Or, as they seem to imply, is God too stupid to know what's going on and therefore needs them to tell Him what to do?

The way I handle people like this woman now is to ask to see their hands. "Hmm," I say, "I do not see any nail scars, so this isn't your call to make."

Can't argue much with any of the answers. Too many people like to be out front and get all the praise and be in charge; when they are more of the confusion than anything else.

Those type people I've learned are the kind who think they're Gods chosen ones.

If you cant rely on God or Jesus, then what is the point of believing at all?

Maybe your boss just didnt want your particular prayer answered?

I do not beleive it was personal toward me; she believed that she was spiritually superior to everyone else, taught by the church she attended, which will be nameless. I wish that at that time I had told her that she didn't have the nail scars in her hands. Let's hope that she has developed some humility between then and now.

Poor God . . . He didn't realize that he needed her permission to work! LOL

I am a freelance writer with a BA in English and an MA in Counseling from UAB. I attend church locally, am a member of Mensa and the Magic City Blues Society. Showing my age here . . . I'm a huge Monty Python fan. My opinions and statements in no way reflect the attitudes, teachings or opinions of any of the organizations to which I belong. Eschewing snobbery, I have friends who are dirt poor and friends who are very wealthy. In fact, one of my best friends is the retired wrestler The Great Kaiser. My avatar is CoCo, my cockatiel, who thinks he is a person. He also responds to his nickname, "Boss." He enjoys watching baseball and football on TV - in fact, if you get between him and the TV during a game, he will seriously squawk at you. He's a gentle soul, though, well-socialized, and is terrific with children. I need to get a picture of him and my sister's chihuahua kissing beak-to-nose.
