I have suffered from clinical depression for most of my adult life.  This disease first manifested at a time when it was considered to be a spiritual deficiency rather than a genuine disease.  And of course some people the church I attended at the time were very condemning.  I also went through some terrible counselors during those years as well.  I remember one who fired me as a patient because I did not agree with his diagnosis.

When I'm on my antidepressants I'm OK - you would not realize anything is wrong - but when money runs short and I run out of the anti-depressant, the past comes rushing in like the gulf waters in New Orleans during Katrina.  As a former canoeist (I no longer paddle due to a heart problem), I can tell you that it feels like I'm running the danged Colorado River with no end in sight.  How I pray for some flat water for a change, or at least the skills to run the Colorado.

For some reason, January and February are the most difficult months, probably due to the cold, the short days, less sunshine than usual, etc.  So in 2009 I'm going to try some vitamin D tablets to see if that will help.

I am seeing an excellent counselor who is very patient and understanding ... thank God for him.

I've mentioned in responding to another question that there are churches whose members act as if they are truly in charge of the spiritual condition in the B'ham area.  What is going to happen in Heaven when they get to Heaven and discover the presence of those whom they themselves would have condemned?  What are they going to do with the fact that God is in control?

It would make excellent Pythonesque satire to examine their options.  Would they swagger up to God's throne and confront Him with Bible verses ?  Threaten to walk out of Heaven . . . where are they going to go . . . The Other Place, I suppose . . . if God doesn't kick those so-and-so's out?

One thing we Christians need to remember is that we are NOT the potter - we are the clay.

A few years ago, at the place where I was working at the time, in a conversation with a co-worker I said ". . . God is going to do something . . ." about a problem we were discussing.  Well, my supervisor, who went to one of these "We're in charge" churches, called me into her office and yelled, "LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING!!!  GOD DOESN'T OWE YOU ANYTHING EXCEPT FOOD, CLOTHING AND SHELTER, AND YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO RELY ON HIM FOR ANYTHING ELSE!!!!"  Can you imagine being chewed out for having faith!!

As the world becomes increasing more unsafe, and American politics more and more uncertain, in this election year, all of us who believe in God, regardless of our approach to Him, need to pray that we will elect to office honorable people who put this country and our people ahead of their own personal and financial concerns.  If this country falls to our enemies, the politicians will be no safer than the rest of us.

Obama won the primary in Alabama!    And I'm not the only white person to vote for him.  It's time for somebody other than a Clinton or a Bush in office for a change.  I just hope and pray that some stupid person does not decide to take him out.  He seems like the type of person who could come to your home to visit and be very comfortable with anyone.

OK, I know I'm going to be vilified for this next statement . . . so if you don't agree, just go away.  If Muslim extremists start anything after next January, I truly believe President Hilary would go on TV with a scarf on her head, while President Obama would meet the challenge head on.

IMHO, this #$%& has lost its right to be called human.  I say they take it out a put a bullet through its head . . . of course, that's a waste of a perfectly good bullet.    Seriously, Couey does not deserve to live after what he did to poor Jessica Lunsford.  The terror and horror that poor child endured is beyond comprehension.   As for divine forgiveness, get him off the planet and let God deal with him.

Here are some questions I would like to ask the presidential candidates. I feel that someone who hasn't done any of the following in a few years may be out of touch with the lives of everyday people in this country.

1. When is the last time you drove your car yourself?

2. When is the last time pumped your own gasoline?

3. When is the last time you wrote your family's expense checks instead of farming that task out to the accountant?

4. When is the last time you and your spouse/significant other went shopping and bought your groceries?

5. When is the last time you, your spouse or significant other cooked a meal?

6. When is the last time you said "No" to your child?

What do y'all think?

Should English be the USA's official language? What about the official language of Alabama? My thinking is that if one is going to move to the U.S., legally or illegally, then one should learn the language, or at least pick it up while here. It's frustrating to call a business and hear, "Press 1 for English," etc. If I don't press 1, is the menu going to default to using Spanish?

And what about the illegals who come to America and then demand that licenses, etc. be conducted in Spanish! You know, if I were to move to France, I'd do so with the understanding that I'm going to have to speak French and conduct business in French.

What do y'all think about this?

I am a freelance writer with a BA in English and an MA in Counseling from UAB. I attend church locally, am a member of Mensa and the Magic City Blues Society. Showing my age here . . . I'm a huge Monty Python fan. My opinions and statements in no way reflect the attitudes, teachings or opinions of any of the organizations to which I belong. Eschewing snobbery, I have friends who are dirt poor and friends who are very wealthy. In fact, one of my best friends is the retired wrestler The Great Kaiser. My avatar is CoCo, my cockatiel, who thinks he is a person. He also responds to his nickname, "Boss." He enjoys watching baseball and football on TV - in fact, if you get between him and the TV during a game, he will seriously squawk at you. He's a gentle soul, though, well-socialized, and is terrific with children. I need to get a picture of him and my sister's chihuahua kissing beak-to-nose.
