It's something new every day with Birmingham's new mayor.  He claims to be such a good person, such a man of God but just look at the corner he's in now.  Things like this don't happen without a reason and the reason's the last few people from our area have given for things happening to them just don't make sense.  Why would the Federal Government single out a few people politically involved within the state of Alabama to "railroad" and for what reason?  What could they possibly gain?  In a word, NOTHING!

It's high time the people of Birmingham start really reading the paper, listening to the news and making decisions based upon what is being reported and by whom.  Alabama, "EDUCATE YOURSELVES".  Don't let your state or city be the laughing stock of the rest of the country.  Help to create a political environment that we can all be proud of.  Let your every decision be an INFORMED one.

Sorry, too late - Birmingham is the laughing stock of the nation. If it's not remembering fire hoses and police dogs, it's stupid, crooked politicians. I am very specific when I tell people where I live and make every attempt to avoid even using Birmingham as a landmark. Example:
Q: "Where do you live?"
A: "Homewood."
Q: "Where is that?"
A: "Just north of Hoover and west of Mountian Brook."
No mention of Birmingham if I can help it.

It may be too late for now but it's never too late to try to rectify the situation as grave as it may seem. My philosophy is: "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." So, do what you can to make the right things happen. Even one person can make a difference.

You, sir, are absolutly correct. While it is too late to keep B'ham from being the laughing stock of the nation, one good person - a true leader and visionary - can make a difference. Finding that one true leader that is willing to undertake such a massive overhaul will be an incredible (although not insurmountable) challenge.

We certainly agree on this. The main problem with running for public office seems to be not only do you have to have a huge social life (numerous contacts) but you also have to be very well off in order to be able to afford to at least campaign equal to your opponent. There are many good people who would make outstanding local politicians; people who live or have lived like the rest of us; but financially they just can't manage. It is so sad that the political realm has made money such a necessary part when service is the main issue.
Oh, by the way, I'm not a sir! I'm a lady!

I agree with you, madam. I think that the ideal politician would be a single mother, who works two jobs, balances a budget the best she can, has grass-root upbringing and is completely in touch with the needs of the average person. God, please send this person with the proper backing, moral and intestinal fortitude, and the desire to do a job of service, making appropriate changes where necessary and capable of upholding the Bill of Rights, supporting the Constitution of the United States, and genuinely caring about her fellow American.

You know, I may have just offended many, it doesn't necessarially have to be a female, a male with all of these qualities would suffice. And please allow me to add that I think that this person should also have a background (not a career) in service to the Military.

Just my opinion, I'm entitled.

To mrayhaynes:
I absolutely loved your email. I couldn't have said it any better myself. Where do you think we could find someone like this that is willing to take all the abuse? We'd probably have to all get together and have fund-raisers to finance the candidacy. I'd be willing to do that for someone I really believed in.

He's a tardo peanut head.
The main problem is the IDIOT's that vote these guys into office. This is why our nation as a whole is going down the toilet.

Our mayor is at it again! Lets see....in the past few days I have read two articles in the Birmingham News regarding his decision to "have it his way" no matter how the City Council votes or what the Jefferson County Personnel Board decides. The first item I read about was the free bus rides. The council voted it down and Mayor Langford said he was going ahead with the plan anyway. The second item had to do with Mayor Langford's selection of Rickey Kennedy to head the Public Works Department. The Personnel Board rejected the mayors choice citing the fact that Mr. Kennedy was not qualified for the job, nor did he have the necessary background. This seems like a legitimate reason to me; however, once again, Mayor Langford's chief of operations said Mr. Kennedy will keep the job anyway and the mayor will appeal to a NEW personnel board expected to take the place of the existing one under a state-mandated restructuring. How convenient that the restructuring just happened to take place at just the exact moment Mayor Langford needed!!

I'm beginning to wonder why we have a City Council or a Personnel Board. If Mayor Langford is going to "have it his way" no matter what, why are these things in place in our government???? Evidently Larry Langford has appointed himself "God"; therefore, what he says is right PERIOD.

Are the citizens of Birmingham and Jefferson County going to allow this?? Surely everyone isn't content with the "power monster" Mayor Langford has become. Someone had better figure out a way to put a stop to his madness and they'd better do it soon! The

I'm a retired female banker and a staunch Republican. I am very much interested in politics and dislike the dirty path many local politicians have taken in recent days. I am a Christian and I firmly believe that God is the only one who can help America out of the hole it has dug for itself.
