I read in the paper yesterday that Larry Langford and Bettye Fine Collins are calling for the removal of advertisements on city buses informing our residents about the current syphillis rampage  through our communities.

It seems that BEFORE the campaign was ever started, the health department sent certified letters to all city leaders informing them of what they planned to do and asking for any input that they wanted to offer.  Not a single person volunteered a thing!  To me, this would indicate that they were O.K. with what I had "in the works" and would give me free reign to continue on as I saw fit.

Now both Larry Langford and Bettye Fine Collins are saying that the bus ads should be removed as it sends out a negative image of our city.  Negative as it may be, it's still a reality and one that should be addressed in any way that works.  What better way to let everyone know than through billboards and bus advertisements?  Everyone doesn't read the daily paper and listen to the news.  These people must be reached.

It's more than obvious to me that the two above mentioned politicians are more interested in their political careers than they are with the health and well being of their constituents.

Well, the sewer problems facing Jefferson County have once again made front page headlines.  The bond insurers want EVERYONE to have to pay for the  sewer system  debt.

Let me get this right now.  I didn't ASK for the new sewer system  and I don't USE the sewer system (I have a septic tank) yet I'm expected to bail out Jefferson County.  Just what is wrong with this scenario???  The same thing that is wrong with the Federal government bailing out failed S & L businesses a few years back and now wanting to bail out homeowners that took on more debt than they could afford.  Personal responsibility  seems to be lacking in both of these examples. and also in the case of the sewer system.  "Biting off more than you can chew" seems to be a way of lfe in this area.  "Keeping up with the Jonses" is the top priority of our elected commision officials.  Our officials want the best of everything for the people in this area and just go forward with it, having given no thought to how we will be able to afford it or what to do if it doesn't go as planned.

You MUST run a city, county, state or country government just like you run a successful business.  KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY YOU HAVE TO SPEND AND DON'T SPEND MORE THAN YOU HAVE!!!  Don't count on "projected" revenues to finance things.  What is projected in some cases never comes to pass.

It's something new every day with Birmingham's new mayor.  He claims to be such a good person, such a man of God but just look at the corner he's in now.  Things like this don't happen without a reason and the reason's the last few people from our area have given for things happening to them just don't make sense.  Why would the Federal Government single out a few people politically involved within the state of Alabama to "railroad" and for what reason?  What could they possibly gain?  In a word, NOTHING!

It's high time the people of Birmingham start really reading the paper, listening to the news and making decisions based upon what is being reported and by whom.  Alabama, "EDUCATE YOURSELVES".  Don't let your state or city be the laughing stock of the rest of the country.  Help to create a political environment that we can all be proud of.  Let your every decision be an INFORMED one.

I'm a retired female banker and a staunch Republican. I am very much interested in politics and dislike the dirty path many local politicians have taken in recent days. I am a Christian and I firmly believe that God is the only one who can help America out of the hole it has dug for itself.
