Wednesday afternoon on my way home from work I attempted to pass another vehicle. I was in the right lane and that lane was ending. He was in the left lane I needed to merge. The guy actually cut me off by taking up both lanes forcing me to brake rather quickly.

I gave him the finger with both fingers and pumped them up and down for emphasis while screaming out the window directions for what I felt he should do to himself. I probably shouldn't have done that. It was not mature behavior on my part, but I was tired and that jerk didn't have to cut me off like that.

Well, I am behind him going down the road and for some reason he stomps his brakes a couple of times, as if he wanted me to hit him. I didn't hit him. We came to a red light and stopped and this guy puts his truck into park and gets out. He comes toward my car yelling and cussing.

I could not see his right arm or his right side  so I reached into my console and took out my gun and held it up. I told him "Keep comin M-Fer". I know that wasn't very mature either but like I said, I didn't know if or what he had with him. I couldn't see his right side. Besides that, this guy is clearly an a-hole and I'm a little bit angry at this point.

I never had any intention of killing this guy, but I was definately going to shoot him in the leg had he kept coming. Luckily, he showed me his hands and got back in his truck and drove on. He called the police and they ended up pulling me over a few miles further down the road.

I'd like to give some respect to the Bessemer Police Dept. Even though I think they sent way more officers than was needed just for little ole me, I think they handled the situation very professionally. They secured and unloaded my weapon, asked me what happened, looked at my license and permit, gave my gun back, and left.

They were polite. They didn't try to man handle me or intimidate me. It's good to know we have good police officers around here and I got to meet a LOT of them Wednesday evening. lol So, here's to you Bessemer PD!! Well done.

The point I'm getting at is, no matter how angry someone makes you in traffic, please do not ever get out of your vehicle and approach another vehicle on foot, especially if you are yelling or looking for a fight. You have no way of knowing what they have in the car with them. They have no way of knowing what you have with you.  It isn't worth getting shot.

That guy may never know how close he came to walking with a permanent limp. Please don't be stupid. Some things are worth fighting for, but getting cursed at in traffic is not one of those things.

Suggestion Martin, instead of speeding up and trying to pass him, why not slow down and fall in behind him? But then the proper thing to have done was the BLEEP move over and let you have the right lane, but most people will not do that.

A very similar scenario could happen to almost any given person on any given day around here. No, we're not all packing heat - but the guy exiting his vehicle could have been the one with a loaded gun approaching the vehicle with an unarmed driver fastened securely with their seat belt in their vehicle with no place to go.

The solution is to be responsible and pay attention to what you're doing. What differenec does it make if there's one car-length difference? To say that Martin should have fallen in to the rear without being there would be second-guessing. Maybe he should have, maybe he shouldn't have. Not my call, as I was not there. A lot of times when one tries to merge in, the driver in the traveling lane will make it incredibly difficult to merge, as if they have sole, exclusive rights to the lane; as if they're going to get where they're going any faster if they are twenty feet in front of the other car.

Birmingham drivers should take a hint from the friendliest drivers in the world (that I have experienced) - Dublin, Ireland. Dublin is an extremely crowded and congested city with narrow roads, huge buses and light rail cars. Still, that is the friendliest place I have ever driven. They merge, they wave to you, they're just plain friendly... folks used to say that about the south.

The main problem is, its a ME society. No one thinks of anyone but themselves. Being curteous is a sign of weakness, that includes males and females.

How did I miss this??

Can someone inform me of the memo where the left lane is now the acceptable lane for slower traffic to travel in? Coming back from Atlanta on Saturday, I almost went postal on this chick driving an Explorer and this dude driving a mega van for chilling in the left lane, thus riding right next to me. Martin, I've told my daddy to look into buying me a pistol, but after Saturday, I'm thinking no, because I tend to get fiesty and a fiesty Katie on a mug shot is NOT a good look for me......

Remember the chick that killed the woman on the ramp of I65 a few years ago? Martin, always keep that in mind....and another thing to keep in mind....WWJD? LOL!

Y'all, yesterday as I was entering I-20, this guy behind me, concentrating on what was in his drinking cup and not paying attention, almost rear-ended me. As cars were coming behind us in the middle and left-hand lanes, I had no choice but to run off the road! As he passed, he glared at me like I was wrong for being in front of him. I caught up with him a few miles down the road and sat way behind him. But before I caught him, I did pass a state trooper. If I had remembered the make of the car, I certainly would have flagged down the trooper and reported the incident.

You know, I think I'll make a bumper sticker that says, "Sorry for being in your way."

Jesus would make Peter drive so he wouldn't have to deal with these idiots. Then he would tell Peter how to drive from the back seat, sort of like he does with us now. lol

I think a lot of people deserve to get shot for getting out of their car because of road rage. Not saying to do it or that i would i don't have a gun but people are too dangerous i was at a red light and the guy in front of me gets out of his car and comes towards me with a bat. I backed up and left, but I literately didn't know this guy and just pulled up behind him, come to find out i had hit my bright lights when i pulled in behind him... he was in a truck he couldn't be blinded by it. Anyways point is you did the right thing people are nuts and I live in McCalla so I see Bessemer cops a lot and yea they are fast.

Why did'nt you just run his ass over?

That would have damaged his car James. I would only run him over if he threw the bat at the car. Well, me personally I would shoot him, but if I were unarmed as this man was I would have tried to avoid damage to my car. If he hits the car with the bat, the car is already damaged. At that point, yea, might as well run over him.

I had a similar experience. The only difference though was the guy didn't get out of his car he tried to wreck me with his car. He locked up the brakes twice and run me out of the road 3 times. I held up my gun and he stopped. Turns out that since I left the road to keep him from hitting me I had no right to defend my self as no contact was made. If I had held my lane and he had hit me I would have been justified and he would have been arrested for assult.

Wow! Those are scary incidents, the kind you see on "Cops." Maybe we need video cameras in our cars like the police have in theirs. Then we could take the tapes to the police and let them do what needs to be done. Can you see the guy saying, "Huh? I didn't threaten anybody with a gun!" And then the cop shows him the video.

Some good advice in here and some not so good advice....

The main thing that will keep people out of trouble or from getting hurt is to just let it roll off. Flipping people off or hanging out the window yelling is inviting trouble from some other hot head. This just escalates the situation which could erupt into a violent confrontation or an uneccessary encounter with the police. People be courteous to one another and try to keep your cool. Remember that you will encounter aggressive drivers during your commute. Avoid a potential deadly encounter, move out of the way and go about your business. And remember that it is a privilege to drive, not a right!
