I often read, especially on international message boards, that Americans are too religious, patriotic and that our constitution is out dated. I don't believe that, if anything we need more of those things instead of less.

Right and wrong has never changed. Peoples perception of right and wrong is changing constantly. The way people justify doing wrong and grow to accept things because the majority seems willing to except them doesn't change what is right and what is wrong.

It is called a shifting moral baseline. It can happen to an individual or an empire. The fall of Rome is a perfect example of a nation falling because of a shifting moral baseline.

The process of a shifting moral baseline is very slow. People don't go from being scared to say a curse word to having blood orgies in a week or two.

I'll give you an example that happens every day in America. I have actually witnessed this example of a personal shifting moral baseline.

At 17 years old Sara is still a virgin. She goes to church with her parents twice a week. She has never been drunk or high. On her senior trip all her friends are drinking, they are drunk, and appear to be having a very good time.

She figures it won't hurt if she has a few drinks. After all it is her senior trip. She may not see some of these guys after graduation. She has a few drinks, she gets buzzed, and she has a great time. It was the most fun she has ever had. She was a little tired the next morning, but after breakfast she felt fine.

Drinking had not hurt her or anyone else that night. Everyone had a great time and no one got hurt.

A few nights later they were having another party. They were passing a joint around and trying to get her to hit it. She was relunctant at 1st, but after a few drinks she loosened up and took a hit. She felt great. Again, she and everyone else had a great time and nothing bad happened.

This went on for a year or so after the trip was over and they came home. She went to a party ever now and then, had a few drinks, smoked a little weed, and it was cool. She was fine. No one got hurt.

She even met a guy at a party and they started dating. One night they got intimate in one of the spare rooms at the party house. She didn't want to have sex. She was still a virgin and a little scared. She didn't want to make her boyfriend mad. He had been very patient with her and was really horny. He didn't understand why she wouldn't give it up. He told her it made him feel like she didn't love him or want him.

She definately didn't want him to think that, so she masturbated him. What's so bad about that? It will ease his pain and she is still pure, right?

After a while masturbation wasn't enough so she gave him oral sex. Hell, what is so bad about giving oral sex? She has already let him see her naked and let him perform oral sex on her. She has been masturbating him. She knows he is clean so why not?

It isn't long before she has sex with him. What is so bad about that? She has done everything else? What is so bad about sex? Besides, all of her friends had done it 2 or 3 years earlier.

A few months later she catches her boyfriend cheating on her. She is very upset and one night at a party she meets another guy. She is very high, very drunk, and he has some cocaine. She tries it. She loves it. She sleeps with him.

Fast foward two years.

She is a dancer at a strip club. She sells her body to nasty old drunks twice her age and performs favors to the club owner for cocaine.

If you had told her at 17 that in 4 years she would be a stripper, a prostitute, and a cocaine addict, she would have slapped you, but it happened and it happens every day. The names, faces, and minute details may change, but the story is always the same.

This is the story of Sara's shifting moral baseline. It can happen to an individual or a society. It's happening right now, to both, all over the world.

Right and wrong never changed. Sara changed. The only thing the Devil ever changes, is you. Once you start down that road, every step gets a little easier.

The only good thing about a shifting moral baseline is that as long as you are still alive, you can shift it back.

I MEAN COME ON THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE. SHE IS 17, SHE SHOULD HAVE ALREADY HAD SEX. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE SEX DOESN'T MEAN YOU ARE GONNA END UP A CRACK HO. THIS SEEMS LIKE A VERY EXAGGERATED STORY. AND IF TRUE A ONE IN A MILLION INSTANCE. PEOPLE GROW UP AND TRY DIFFERENT THINGS. YOUR MORALS DO CHANGE AND IT DOES HAVE A LOT TO DO WITH SOCIETY. BUT IT DOESN'T ALWAYS END UP LIKE THIS. SOME PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN SOME SELF CONTROL, ISN'T THAT PART OF MORALITY. DON'T GO BUCK WILD AND REMEMBER THE THINGS YOU WERE TAUGHT WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER. THOSE LESSONS WILL GO ALONG WAY.

are you just practicing your amateur soft porn skills ? weird that your discussion was all based on sex.

Martin_Kaine, stronger words than I might have used but you definitely got your point across. I have to agree with your thoughts on the process of deteriorating morals. I've watched this nation slowly drift away from it's moral base over the past 50 years. We're accepting things now as normal, even good, that 40 or 50 years ago the general public would have been outraged over. It is true that right and wrong does not change. I've heard people use the term "the new morality" when referring to today's attitudes about what's right and wrong but it's really just the old immorality disguising itself.

@ southerngold

What is weird to me is that "sex" is all you got out of it. I didn't mean to turn you on.

I have either failed as a communicator or you are a jackass, maybe both.

@ SOMEPEOPLE,

There are about 150 million females in the US. According to your math the whole country only has 150 strippers.

You gonna stand by that one. You gonna stand by the statement that a person 17 years old should have already had sex?

It's a true story, but more importantly, it is a mirror of the moral decline taking place in our society.

you got a real nice mouth on you Kaine - i'm very impressed by your communication skills *cough* ... your story on moral decline just had to be about sex, being horny, masturbation, oral sex - it reads like a soft porn short story - ya couldn't think of any other example to discuss ? pathetic

Southerngold, if my story reads like soft porn, maybe it is because the life of a typical American teenager has become more and more like soft porn.

Ofcourse I could of thought up a story unrelated to sex, but this is a true story. I felt a real life example might be more effective than something I just made up out off the top of my head.

Sue me, or write something better yourself maybe??

Why does the topic of sex make you so uncomfortable? Not gettin any?

SO BY YOUR RATIONAL YOU ARE SAYING THAT STRIPPERIS A COKE ADDICT. NOT EVERY STRIPPER IS A COKE WHO**.
THERE ARE MANY WOMEN WHO HAVE ENDED UP WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU. YOU ARE BEING JUDGE MENTAL ON A WHOLE GROUP OF WOMEN. THERE ARE STRIPPERS WHO ARE PAYING THEIR WAY THROUGH COLLEGE, TO BECOME DOCTORS, LAWYERS, TO PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE, AND SOMETIMES JUST BECAUSE THEY WANT TO GET NAKED. THAT DOESN'T MAKE THEM DRUG ADDICTS. YOU ARE IGNORANT TO MAKE SUCH A STATEMENT. MY INITIAL RESPONSE WAS THE WAY YOUR PRECIOUS SARA ENDED UP IN HER SITUATION. DID SHE DUMP U? IS THAT WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT?

I have no idea what you just said or why even. I didn't make any such generalizations.

The caps lock key is to the left.

Martin_Kaine, I think maybe you hit a little too close to home for "somepeople". Whatever the case, you hit the nail on the head. Your story could be applied to any number of situations in life. Young people as well as some older people simply cannot grasp the concept that it's always easier for someone to pull you down than it is for you to pull them up. There are so many ethical and moral choices in life and if you have no personal standards for yourself, you are doomed to make the wrong choices. In the long run, you can't go wrong doing right.

Proverbs 20:9 (Whole Chapter)
Who can say, "I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin"?

Enough said!

Daniel 11:32
With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him.

One verse of the Bible is never "enough said". Read the rest of it and quote it with the knowledge of it's context.

Martin_Kaine, It seems you have stepped on some toes but I have yet to figure out what the offense is. Taking a stand against moral corruption will always offend some I guess.

Shifting moral baseline? I think this fits under that subject. Is anyone else having this problem? I'm having a problem posting replies to the blog ALL GAY PEOPLE ARE CHILDREN OF JAH (GOD)? No problems posting elsewhere so I assume Fox6, for some politically correct reason, has blocked any further opposing views in that particular thread. It seems they knew who they wanted to have the last word.

It's not Fox6. Blog authors are allowed to delete responses from their blog. For example, I could delete your replies to this blog if I wanted to.

I think your replies in that other blog were deleted by the author.

Wow, didn't know that but my new replies are not being posted at all. He can't delete what's not there.

Yea but he can disable replies or select to not allow replies that he has not approved.

He deleted my reply in that blog as well so don't feel to bad.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't familar with these tactics. I tried to be fair and nonconfrontational with my replies but apparently they were hitting a little too close to home. It's not the first time I've been cut off in similar message board situations.

The blogosphere is not a democracy. It is millions of little Empires and each Emperor has full authority over all that is done and said within his/her borders.

The good part is that you can have an Empire too.

Do you remember the first response I gave to your first blog Martin? It’s not always what you say but how you say it. I enjoyed this on and got the point. It’s not about sex but compromising ones beliefs. It’ like a chain reaction, it gets easier and easier to do. Personally, I would have used a different example, such as the changing morals of America is view through TV. We lost school prayer and then the language on TV gets worse then the acceptability of nudity of TV to anything goes! When you compromise the first time it’s a snowball down hill! I do believe it is possible to stop the cycle, it just gets harder the longer it is allowed to go on. Nice blog all in all, I got it and enjoyed it very much! Well done!

Thanks.

I agree that a different example would have been much more palettable to some people, but this is an example that I have actually seen happen.
