The conflict between Georgia and Russia may be dying down due to a cease fire being signed. This makes me happy as I saw in my mind a fiasco of biblical proportions unfolding had this not happened.

I don't make it a habit to criticize our commander-in-chief because that's not my job; however, I will go on record saying he should stay out of Georgia and Russia's stuff. That is not our business. There are some things that we shouldn't get involved in and this is one. To become embroiled in a war with Russia is something that we have to avoid. Remember- and someone can correct me if I'm wrong- but a president cannot go out of office during a war/conflict/etc. Now I'm not itching for one of the other guys to get in, but Bush has served his time.

There are several countries that I never want to see us in conflict with and Russia is one. Could it be that since Georgia has oil refineries located on its soil, we want to protect it from being "bullied"? Isn't that why we ran to the aid of Kuwait?

Instead of policing other people's business, we desperately need to police our own.

This is a tough one, Katie. I agree that we have enough going on right now and do not need to get too involved militarily. In this case, I think, we need to give diplomacy a chance to work. We attempted diplocy in Iraq. It didn't work. We're there now. Enough on Iraq.

The other side of the coin is that Georgia is an ally of ours. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, we have been engaged with many of the former Soviet republics with all sorts of aid packages, including mentoring their military. Several states' National Guards are aligned with a respective republic to assist them in a variety of areas. Many of the former Soviet republics seek entrance into NATO, as official allies.

Our own state of Georgia (as in peaches) in this country is the partner with the republic of Georgia. Alabama has been aligned with Romania - who several years ago were accepted into NATO. A lot of people don't know this. Romania has troops committed to various regions in support of several operations as a part of our coalition. Likewise, Georgia has had troops committed along side us in Iraq.

We should give diplomacy a chance to work in Georgia. Although Russia has strengthened over the years since the demise of the Soviet Union, I still don't think they want to get involved militarily with us regardless of how thin some people think we're spread.

Yes. Diplomacy. Despite what some bloggers think, I'm not hell-bent on killing. I believe in the preservation of life, especially those of my countrymen - which unfortunately sometimes involves taking the lives of others in

Katie dear I beleive you are absolutely right,I may be wrong but I was under the impression that during a time of war or civil unrest involving the US,The sitting President has the authority to cancel elections and remain in office until the conflict ceases. And it would not surprise me 1 bit if the current administration tried this come November!

I also beleive that this is going to be a blood thirsty and nasty election, and a repeat of 2000 between Bush and Gore.

F B is correct. We should always try diplomacy first but when we get too weak to assist an ally, we will cease to have an ally.
Georgia is a trusted ally.

Russia has let it be known that they aren't happy without their previous empire.
If Georgia falls, will Ukraine be next?
I hope European sissies wake up before it's too late.
Bullies have to be stopped quickly if at all possible.

NATO should give quick acceptance to both and that will give Russia second thoughts.

As far as suspended elections go, 75 percent of the experts predicted that fallacy in 2004. They believed a terrorist plot was being planned by republicans to keep Bush in office.
Cindy Shehane,(America hater) is predicting that this year. Believe it or not, she still has believers.

Oil is brought up quiet often when we talk about Bush.
Do democrats not care about our oil supply?
Would Obama put a stop to all oil importing?
If we don't protect the areas that we receive oil from, does anyone think gas will be affordable for any of us?
Maybe democrats can afford high prices but I doubt it.
They are some of the biggest screamers about the pump prices now.
Bush is damned if he does but would be more damned if he didn't.

Please show me where I'm wrong.

It nows appears that Russia is pulling back inside their own borders, albeit somewhat slowly. News announcers are calling it, in some cases, a "retreat". I think that's a poor word choice, but that's just me. We've not heard the last of Russia, nor have the Georgians. I honestly believe they were just testing the waters a bit.

Kati101, I couldnt agree with you more on this. As far as I'm concerned Russia, Georgia, and other countries such as that are not a threat against the United States and we need to stay the hell out of their business. We have enough problems dealing with terrorists and terrorists countries trying to bring us down than to get involved with Russia and Georgia. I do admire Georgia for making a stand, and thats what all countries should do when aggression comes their way. But it is high time that the United States stops being the police department of the world. Lets spend our efforts on winning the war we are already involved in and bring our troops home. Notice I said "Winning" the war. By God if we do go to war lets finish it in a victory to help discourage other terrorist groups or countries from wanting a war with us. But by all means our plate is full. Let Russia and Georgia handle their own disputes. As always Katie, I admire your logical thinking and opinions!

Let me go on record saying that I am a conservative and that means I usually vote Republican unless an Artur Davis-like person is running. I agree that Georgia is an ally, but surely we aren't the only ones. We can't be the only country that doesn't like to stand by and watch smaller countries get picked on, surely not.

I guess the essence of my post is that I love my country and there are so many things that ail it that we need to be attending to. Ler me again say that I don't make it a habit to criticize the Bush administration-- I happen to love my president. But I sincerely hope that he's not looking for a "last hurrah" on his way out.

I appreciate everyone's opinion.

I can't beleive it! Something we actually agree on.But do you know if what were saying about the President being able to remain in office is true or not? I don't know.I've heard that but I'm not sure.

Open question..
If Russia invaded Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Poland, France or any other European country, should we get involved?

Is there any country that we should protect?

Here's the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution that covers the president's term of office:

Here's the bottom line up fron this time: two-terms, 8 years, that's it. Unless the president in question serves two years of his predecessor's term, in that case can serve two terms on his own for a toatl of ten years. That's only been done once.

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Section 2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

I really don't think Bush is looking for a "last hurrah" - he's got enough of a hurrah going on right now. As far as other countries, we'd be in the game for any of the European countries that oldphart mentioned. And we're on-board for having Georgia in NATO. What good is an alliance if you don't protect your allies? That's part of the problem with the UN - it has no backbone and credibility.

If you think we're spread thin, other countries that have been enaged in the war are having a tougher time than us. Unfortunately, we're about it as far as protection goes. We do have other priorities - like winning the war we're engaged in right now. But Georgia does need to know that should our very best diplomatic efforts fail, we can offer some level of assistance.

Well stated fargingbastige .
Georgia is a small country but proportionally had almost as many troops in Iraq as we did. The invasion of their country by Russia caused them to leave to protect their home land from a giant.

Many of the other countries put their tails between their legs and fled at the first threat against their country by terrorists.

We need more dependable allies like Georgia.

I wonder how many of the other 25 NATO members would go to defend another member if they were invaded by Russia.?
My guess would be that they would plead for the U.S.A. to save them.

Maybe we should withdraw from NATO and the United Nations, withdraw all of our troops deployed on foreign lands, guard our borders, and live off the fat of our land. Any takers?

On most days I'd like to withdraw to the confines of the little patch of earth I call "home" and not deal with anyone...

No, seriously, NATO is still a viable organization, hense many smaller, emerging countries want to get in. Yeah, they know we're the big dog and can afford protection, but they also have something to contribute. While I'm not too familiar with Georgian soldiers, I am with many of the other soldiers from NATO countries and they are great soldiers - the kind of guys you'd want with you in a fight.

The UN hasn't been a force to reckon with since... We've lost nothing by pulling out of that monstrosity of a do-nothing, bureaucratic organization. While I don't really subscribe to the isolationist concept, getting out of the UN would be fantastic.
