Being that I can be somewhat high-maintenance, I get a pedicure and manicure every two weeks. I get these services at a shop in Alabaster- some of the nicest Vietnamese people you'd ever want to meet. Today, one of the women who usually does my nails told me that Friday and Saturday, she's going to Atlanta to take the U.S. citizenship test. She is so excited- she's only been here a year, yet she's been ardently trying to learn the language so that she can be successful with this test. I don't know this woman at all outside of the nail shop, but I am soooo very happy for her. She came to America, wants to stay, and is taking the proper steps to do so.......so that leads me to the question-

Why can't Mexican immigrants do the same? What's the difference with them? Is it because they merely cross a border on land whereas this woman crossed water? She crossed an ocean so that makes her want it more? Obama and McCain both want to give illegal immigrants driver's licenses....(if you don't believe it, look it up). So then, what will be next? Will they give them rights to an already shrinking social security system that barely gives my 80 year-old grandfather $600.00 a month? Will they give the illegal children (not the ones who were born here and who are, in fact, citizens) free financial aid to go to college when they don't even have social security numbers? I'll bet before it's all over, they'll be voting, too. Shame on our wonderful government.

My hat is off to Y.P. I say good for her for wanting to be here legally so that she can partake in everything good and progressive that our country has to offer. She is an example of the US being the land of opportunity and she is capitalizing on it.

Why can't the others follow suit?

Hey Katie, this is wonderful about your Vietnamese friend,I wish her the best!Have you ever been to Western union office on Friday evenings?I have seen Mexican workers packed in these places,or any place that does Money transferring and Money orders.I would think that they make their tax free money here in the states, working their ILLEGAL jobs, hired by DIRTBAG contracter's who should be thrown in jail for hiring them!and they take that money and send it back to their families in Mexico because they want to leach off the U.S. and don't want to be a citizen.Me I have been at Talledega since Tuesday night working to get prepared for the race.I am very tired, sunburned, and also caught a cold.I have a picture up in a little while showing the damage the sun can do to your skin when Dummies like me forget their sunscreen and chapstick. MUCH LOVE JAMEZZZ

Hi Jamezzz. I hope you recover from 'Dega. I heard attendance was down this year.......

I guess since you're the only one to respond to this blog that others aren't as passionate about it as I am. Our state lawmakers run away from the illegal immigration issue faster than a drug dealer runs from the DEA. I guess because it's labeled as a "federal" issue, that means they don't have to pay attention to it. Only the very opposite is true. Three of our surrounding states have passed illegal immigration legislation because the federal government WON'T. I'm tired of paying tax dollars to educate and feed and provide health care for those who don't belong here.

I heard you a long time ago love!you know I have no problem at all with people wanting to be a U.S. citizen,If they do so legally.but the majority of them only come to the states to leach off of our already struggling Government Teat.If they want to be a citizen,go through the process legally or go back home. That's the way I see it.

Katie, everything you've mentioned is already in the works or happening right now. Illegals are already getting special treatment, by our government.

My husband received that statment from SS, the one that tells you what you will draw when you reach 62,it now has a place where you can go to get the statement in Spanish!!!!!

And why do you think there is such a stink about showing ID to vote? Why would it matter if you are legal?

And if not already, it's in the works to give illegals in state tuition. They are given more in state benefits than people born here.

Why, because the politicians see them as future voters, so each party goes out of their way to accomodate(?) them.

Write the politicians, tell them how you feel. You may just get a form letter in reply, but someone is keeping up with what we are saying, at least, I hope they are.

See if ya'll can answer this,I know it's off topic but how do politicians think that a voter showing their picture ID is disenfranchising.and why in the hell do I have to press 2 for spanish?

Hey Katie, I'm just now getting the update on this blog. Apparently, I was "traveling" around the time that it first went out and had no internet connectivity. It absolutely chaps me that illegals in this country can get the same or better benefits (including preferential treatment) that those immigrants that are doing it the "right way" can. I know that illegal Mexicans have virtually revolutionized certain industries in our country. That's where business leaders and lobbyists have a foot in the door with politicians - funny how it always comes back to politics. My point is that it should have never gotten this far. We have laws. They are not enforced. More laws are not the answer. Unfortunately, our government has "looked the other way" for far too long. Tougher enforcement of the laws we do have, not enacting new benefits for illegals, and deporting those that cannot substantiate that they are here legally will be a start to mitigating a rapidly deteriorating situation.
