I personally am tired of hearing about this dome....The City of Birmingham has more important issues to deal with...The BJCC should be pulling in enough revenue from events it schedules to handle the cost of the expansion themselves...Have you seen the costs of tickets for concerts, circus and other events and not to mention the cost of a soda & hot dog???  The Mayor and other city officials should have schools/education, crime rate, pay/incentives for police officers and firemen at the top of their priority lists.  I personally feel like the dome will invite more crime into the area.  I believe they should address the shortage of police officers first and foremost.  They don't have enough officers now to protect the citizens of B'ham and they are asking people from across the country to come here for events.  What is their plan to protect visitors???  Where will all of the visitors stay over night?  Do you really think they are going to stay Downtown with a sky rocketing murder rate??? I would drive a little further and stay in Shelby County if I were a visitor....Or there are some nicer hotels off of Academy Drive now....

I have spoken many times in comments/blogs about the murder of my brother & the process of trying to get justice.  This is exhausting on a family that is already suffering.  Not only is the city of B'ham short on police there is also a need for more District Attorneys.  Families have to wait a year or more before there is a trial for the accused criminals.  So, chances are that a court date for a murder trial is almost a year to the day that your loved one was killed.....This is emotionally draining on the victim's family already and to have to re-live this so close or on the day of is almost torture.  I thank God that we have managed to get a pretty fair and level headed judge.  We had our first judgment in our case this week.  The 18 yr old will not be tried as a youthful offender but as an adult.  I thought this request for a hearing on this was a waste of time and money.  18 yrs old is a young adult and knows the difference between right & wrong.  We were told a defense attorney can attempt to get a youthful offender status for their client if they are under 21...Personal opinion--if the accused is not mentally challenged save the tax payer’s money and the families the pain..

B'ham also needs to concentrate on their schools....Get the people out of office that are misusing, misspending or even stealing from the pot...Quit electing the idiots that are holding this city back...If they don't do the job--give them the BOOT!!!  DON'T RE-ELECT THEM & then get on the news whining about the poor job they are doing....B'ham's future is sitting in these schools (the children) and if you don't put money into them & make sure it gets where it should be going B'ham will never change.  There are bright kids out there wanting things to be different and want to make a difference.  Those elected officials that are looking out for No. 1 and their buddies should be ashamed and should be publicly humiliated.  They are stealing from children & B'ham's future.  They should be prosecuted just like any other criminal.  The schools should be taken over by the state because obviously B'ham's priorities are TOTALLY SCREWED UP!!!!

I agree with the Dome Stadium. It;s not like we're gonna get a pro football team anyway. Noone pro team will ever succeed hear beacause people in Alabama don't like pro sports here. This is a Collage state and always will be.We have had several teams here and they have folded like paper.
As for the schools well as long as you have crooks in office local and state wide alabama schools will never succeed. The schools need not be givin to the state either. They are just as courupt as the local people. We just need someone in office that cares about our kids and there future..Is there any out there.

You are probably right about the state take over but surely they could do a little better. How many times has this issue come up with B'ham schools? These elected officials let their "power" go straight to their heads and the tax payer's money straigt to their personal wallet.

And when someone attempts something different that could possibly help Kincaid shoots it down because they didn't go through him...Prime example the police chief wanted to bring that A & E show (The First 48 Hours)& had everything worked out with attorneys and all. Kincaid's pride was hurt because he wasn't included in that or maybe it was because it wasn't his idea, so what did he do?
It stops the whole thing in mid stream. I really believe that if the citizens of B'ham could see what their police officers are doing and trying to do it could help build trust between all. The police could probably get more help from the citizens too...
What is it going to take for the citizens of B'ham to wake up and vote in someone that cares about the people and what is best for B'ham?

Saddly the price of tickets is usually swollowed up my the performers, with a small portion going to the promoter and a small fee to the venue. Alabama doesn't play in Birmingham anymore, so the only team to use the thing would be UAB. Of course you could hold concerts and other things there too, but until Birmingham gets a lid on it's crime problem who wants to risk their life going there?

I can not belive that the City of Birmingham still wants to waste money on any addittion to the BJCC. Birmingham...get your head out of the sand. The only way you could even get me close to agree with this idea, would be to place occupational tax on all....and I say all, lawyers and doctors. Why should they be excempt? If the addition to BJCC passes, if you don't pay your share, you don't get in. Why should I pay and you get a FREE RIDE. Also hire more police and retain them. Make your city safe again and prevent takeover. maybe Birmingham can finish one task before they start another. Maybe the city needs a state takeover like the school system does. To those that don't pay occupational tax....stay your butt at the house and watch HBO,ESPN,CNN...you get the picture. Do the elected city officals pay occupational tax?? If you, or they don't, then you are ignorant. And city officals want to know wht people don't want to live or work in Birmingham...

I agree with you havnfun. They want to average hardworking citizen to finance their BIG IDEAS when they can't even protect us when we enter the city of B'ham. They can't protect us because they don't have enough police officers and the ones we have are not paid what they are worth. And they can't pay them because they have to finance for these BIG IDEAS. No one should be exempt from the occupational tax!!! It’s the average citizen that is also keeping the doctors and lawyers in business & they should pay the tax to help better the city where their offices are. They should really re-evaluate this but it will never happen because they are so wrapped up in things that the people of B’ham don’t want or care about. Like I've said the officials of B’ham have their priorities screwed up and it's no longer about the citizens’ needs and wants but about their personal gain and what they can do for their buddies. The crime rate is not going to really matter to them until it happens to their family. They need a shot of reality.

The BJCC area really isn't that bad if you compare it against Legion Field or many other parts of Birmingham. Now if you were to compare the BJCC area to the Over the Mountain cities then yes, I'm sure the crime rate would be a huge factor. But what Mr. Richard's is saying is that the proposal is for Birmingham not other areas. Look at the Race Course. It is located in a very safe area yet it was a bust. it was suppose to be a huge investment that would make Birmingham a leading city in the south, now it only collects dust. Do I believe a dome or a M.U.F. facility will be anything other than a money pit? Of course not. Look at the leadership of the city, then compare our city with others it's size across the south. Birmingham is a failure due to it's lack of quality leadership. Do we trust the current leadership to expand a failing entertainment district at such a high cost? No, replace the leadership first with quality and qualified servants, then improve the infrastructure. Oh, and as for a Birmingham politician paying their police a deserving salary, forget it! That is why the crime rate is what it is today. Birmingham has chosen not to invest FIRST in the safety of it's citizens, but into feel good projects that do nothing to make a community safe. Oh, and the occupational tax is unconstitutional to start with. it is an illegal tax. Imagine, having to pay to work. If that isn't corrupt I do not know what is.

I'm a single mother. I am a member of The Church at Ross Station (www.rossstation.org). I give thanks every day for my Savior and for His church and church family. My family's faith and prayers have carried my family through one of the most difficult times in our lives. We lost my brother to some of the violence that is taking over B'ham and across the nation. I'm primarily on MyFoxAl to voice my concerns about the amount of violence in our cities. We must unite together and stand against this. Together we can take our city back....
