The Greater Birmingham Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast (GBMPB) Committee has set the date for its 2008 annual prayer breakfast. The breakfast will take place on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the Harbert Center.  The Mayors of Greater Birmingham and the GBMPB Committee invite public officials, ministers and the public to this event.  The number of regional mayors participating in past events usually represents more than forty (40) municipalities, and is the largest event of this type in Alabama.  Mayor Larry Langford of Birmingham will host the breakfast this year.

The 2008 GBMPB will mark the 44th year for the local commemoration of the event. Although advocated since 1775, the occasion to recognize the national day of prayer has only been possible since President Truman signed this recognition into existence in 1952.   The Act was later amended by President Reagan, who specifically designated the national day of prayer as the first Thursday in the month of May.

This year, the featured guest speaker will be the renowned Dr. Lloyd John Ogilvie, retired chaplain of the U. S. Senate.  Dr. Ogilvie was elected as the 61st chaplain of the U. S. Senate in 1995, where he served until his retirement in 2003.  He is quoted as saying “I saw my role as chaplain to be an intercessor for the members of the senate family, a trusted prayer partner and a faithful counselor to them as they sought to know and to do God’s will in the monumental responsibilities entrusted to them”.  In the capacity of senate Chaplain, he opened the senate process everyday with prayer and met with the senators daily to discuss moral and spiritual issues.  Additionally, he led a weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast, addressed senate bible study and prayer groups, and assisted the senators with theological research and biblical questions.

Dr. Ogilvie has written 49 books and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards.  In 1996, he was recognized by Baylor University as one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English speaking world.  The GBMPB is truly honored to have him as our May 1, 2008 Guest Speaker.

Tickets to the GBMPB breakfast are $15.00 and are available now.  You can make your reservations by calling Patti Claud at 967-0586. Seating is limited and reservations are required.
