I'm getting just about sick of pastors politicking from the pulpit. I have no problem with people expressing the political views and interest but not on some jobs. I am a police officer and have worked in cities with horrible political situations. I had dozens of people come up to me a day and speak ugly about the mayor and attempt to get me to express my personal opinion. I never did while I was in uniform or on duty no matter how badly I wanted to. You see there is a time and a place for everything. As a minister you have a job to do and the pulpit is your office. Your job is preaching the world of God, educating the flock and saving the lost. NOT expressing personal opinion or furthing your own agenda. I fear some have sold their souls and are using the pulpit as a money making scheme or an attempt at gaining power. Woe unto anyone who has! You have accepted a huge responsibility and politics is not in anyway part of it.

We have separation of church and state to prevent the state from instituting a religion but there isn't anything to prevent religion from entering politics. I do not believe you can legislate morality nor should we. I do not believe in forcing my religious views on anyone nor do I want yours forced on me. If you want to change the character and morals of this world the fastest and best way to do it is to live your faith. Don't snow me, show me! Show me your faith by living it everyday.

Give unto the lord that which is the lord and unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. It’s God’s house and the lord's pulpit , let’s give it back to him!

Peace~

If we had more hell in the pulpit, we would have less hell in the pew.
Billy Graham

I agree with most of your post but I don't believe there should be any government restrictions on free speech just because it occurs in the pulpit or church environment. Christians, including pastors and preachers have the same free speech rights as everyone else in the church building or outside it.

Yes! They have the right to free speech, but it appears some of sold their pulpit. It's GOD'S house! Jesus made a point of this in his statement, "Give to Caesar that which is Caesar and give to God that which is God's." Preach his word, educate and up lift the faithful and save the lost. That's the minister's job. Political education is up to the individual to find! I never mentioned government interference in the church! This is something each minister should be doing of his/her own accord!
I go to church to hear a sermon not political propaganda, or to be told who I should be voting for or what political party I should belong to!

Perhaps I should explain myself a little better. I have several close friends who are ministers. Two have recently told me how they are actively campaigning and “delivering” their flocks to a specific candidates for “considerations”. I have also in the past heard ministers at different churches do similar things. I am sure (I hope) they truly believe in the candidates they support however I fear it is a play for favor. They know who they are and I know they read my blogs as we have talked about them before. I openly welcome them to respond here if they wish.

BPDMotor6, I fully respect your opinion and I agree with the general idea of what you're saying but I'm more inclined toward the other end of the spectrum where politics in the church are concerned. A lot of ministers and churches are actively involved in politics which I see no problem with as long moral issues are involved. As an example, Martin Luther King was a "minister" heavily involved in politics. Black churches in general have been involved in politics for years even to the point of busing their members to the polls. I'm sure predominantly white churches have done similar things. I expect my pastor to mention from the pulpit, if necessary, any knowledge he has about the positions of political candidates on moral issues and to expound on what the Bible has to say about those issues. That's what the preacher is there for, to show me from the Bible what's right and what's wrong and if it involves political issues so be it.

My friend you hit the nail on the head!! If it's a question of moral issues I would agree! I do not think morals should be legislated. But I do feel it is the obligation of every minister to stand against sin. My opposition is to selling out to candidates for personal gain. I amend my original statement to reflect the same, and thank you for reminding me to be more clear.

“Not to oppose error is to approve it.”- Pope St. Felix III (5th century)

You actually have an option of changing churches.

Proverbs 20:9
Who can say, "I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin"?

Pastors are only human. GOD says we are NOT to judge lest we are judged.

BPD: I agree with you totally. My preacher never talks about politics from the pulpit. I have known him since he was around 18. A very good person and pastor. He has been at my church for 15 years. His brother is a preacher doing missionary work. His two sisters are members of his church as well as his mother and father. All his children his sibilings children and grandchildren go to this church and the love him so much as well as the other members do. One of his sisters sings in a Gospel group and gives wonderful testmonity thruogh her singing. His other sister plays the piano and also is a very givted singer.

I respect most law inforcement officials and would put my life in line if I saw a officer in need of assistance. They are doing a job of protecting and serving. There a few bad apples in any barrel. I will re-live one of my experiences with a policeman from gardendale if you will bear with me.

This is a comment I placed on another blog:

I am a Christian first and our Church as most churches teaches us to obey the law of the land.
If so-called Christians obeyed the law of the land we would not have so many speeders on the interstates and other roads. In such I have never received a parking ticket and one speeding ticket for going 45 mph in a 35 mph zone at 12:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning when there was no, absolutely no traffic except for me and the gardendale policeman who was parked on the side of Tarrant road. I was going 35, but started down a steep hill and my vehicle gathered up a little speed to the ZOOMING speed of 45 mph. NO TRAFFIC 12:

Continued from the previous comment:

12:30 in the morning. I agree, I was speeding and paid the $133.00 to the city of gardendale. I did not get smart with the officer as that is not the right thing to do. I showed him much more respect than he did me. Did not try to get out of it, but I did write the mayor a letter (after I paid) to let him know what I think about this small-town mentality policeman and him as the overall “man in charge”. Of course I didn’t receive a reply.
I know several people who reside in the city limits of gardendale and they tell me they know of no one that likes the mayor. I for one don't or he would have better control of his officers.
(Notice that I did not capitalize the G in gardendale), that is what I think about them.
I used to shop and least once a week in their fair town and went out to eat at one of their restaurants about 3-4 times a week. I don't live there but I did like going there. But no more. The $133.00 they got from me was the last. No more tax money from me.
Because of the JOKE, FUNNY, CRAZY Jefferson County commission I absoutely refuse to buy anything in any city in Jefferson county. No tax from me. I bought my last three vehicles in Cullman (I live in Walker County). The people in Cullman are so nice there. They seem to go out of their way to help. If you shop in just about any town in Jefferson country you know what kind of mentality you must deal with. (Not all but for the most part yes). You don’t find that in Cullman. I also shop in Walker county, but not for vehicles.

Keep up the good work and as a Ch

I did read your response in the other blog and was saddened by it. I almost never write a ticket for speeding unless it's at least 15mph over the posted limit. There are times in residential areas where I might have to write them for 10mph over but I hate doing that. I don’t know why that happened to you and it makes me sick when people tell me their stories like yours. Again I don’t know why he did it and won’t judge him without knowing the facts , but I do know of officers who write tickets for 10 and less on a regular basis and think nothing about it. Of course they are the same ones constantly being complained about and in trouble. Some officers come to realize that just because the can arrest everyone on earth doesn’t mean they should, others sadly never learn. Please don’t judge all officers by this person, we don’t know why he did what he did, he may have been ordered to do so. Or he could just be a jerk! One thing is certain though…if you were going the speed limit he could not have gotten ya! Take care of you!

What that deviant is referring to is found in Psalms 68.4 it reads:

"Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name Jah, and rejoice before him.

I am by no means have much knowledge about the Bible. But the word JAH is only in it one time and GOD is in the Holy Bible over Three Thousand, Eight hundred times and that is my MAN. Thank him for saving me for a life that was not very good

We legislate and ajudicate morals all the time. Wake up. I do not support the government making Christian morals the law, but, then again, which Christian morals have been proven immoral?

Finally, separation of church and state was created by the U.S. Supreme Court, not the U. S. constitution. If you take Christian morals out of the state, out of the schools, with what do you replace them?

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT nopolitics? Did you even read this before you started writing? This blog is about Preachers selling their souls and congregations to politicians for personal gain! Nothing more! I wrote this because I have several minister friends who have done this and I know they read my blogs. This is the FAITH blog NOT POLITICS blog. I'm not asking for any legislation to do anything, I'm calling on ministers to STOP SELLING their congregations for personal gain! Nothing more! This was a comment on how some (certain not all) pastors have miss used the pulpits for personal fame and glory in this world instead of God's work!Perhaps I was too kind when I wrote this and some of you aren't picking up on the polite way I addressed the issue, SO for the lesser intelligent amoung you Let me be absolutely "sledge hammer" blunt, If your are a minister and you use your pulpit to influence your congregation to vote for a candidate you have a deal with, SHAME ON YOU! There are serious prices to be paid for doing this! I have no problem with a minister speaking on on moral issues! NOW... are there any of you non reading people, who think selling God's house for personal fame and fortune is right and just? Show your ignorance now!

23 year veteran police officer.I am a father of two and grandfather of three. I love to poke fun at things that need to be examined. My favorite sayings are: Don't sweat the little stuff and try not to think too much. As a police officer, if you don't get complained on once in awhile you're not doing your job! I have already been there, done that, got the scars, tee shirt and coffee cup!
