I have read a lot of police bashing in here recently and feel a strong need to set the record straight. Yes there are a few of my brothers and sisters in arms who have Absolutely NO business wearing a badge much less carrying a gun! I admit this openly and up front! They have exceptionally poor attitudes. I know doctors who have really bad  bed side manner that doesn’t make them any less a doctor. Just jerks with a lot of medical knowledge! The vast majority of my associates are decent, honest and hard working people who are simply doing a job. I personally got into law enforcement to make a difference and be a decent shining light. Well, it’s my dream and everyone needs one.  Why is it people HATE the police and LOVE firemen? Because firemen don’t make you do things you don’t want to do and cost you money when you decide you’re not doing to follow the rules or that they simply don’t apply to you.

First, WE (police officers) don’t make the rules! (laws) We just enforce them. We don’t even have the option of picking and choosing which ones we like or want to enforce. Second, most of us hate writing tickets! The only thing I hate worse is cleaning up dead bodies at a wreck scene! But I have learned that if I am writing tickets in a high wreck area, wrecks tend to drop dramatically! WHY? Because people will start paying attention if I’m there. Generally, I only go to an area to write tickets if, A. I have been order to do it by a supervisor or B. I’m tired of cleaning up wrecks at that spot!

NO! I do not have a quota, my Chief says I can write all the tickets I want! I have worked for a department where I did have quotas (Bessemer PD) but most decent departments don’t push their officers to write tickets. My personal policy is not everyone needs a ticket, but some people do! Example, I stopped a person the other day for running a stop sign. This person did not even attempt to slow down! When I got him stopped he pretended to have no knowledge of anything, and claimed the reason he failed to stop is because he did not normally take that route. I’m sorry but no matter which road you travel a stop sign is still a stop sign and means the same thing on all roads! This person NEEDED a ticket! But, by contrast, I stopped a person for traveling a little over the speed limit. As soon as he stopped he immediately admitted his mistake and repented! It’s a little difficult to write someone a ticket in this case as this is all a ticket is for to begin with! NOW, that’s not to say if you go around doing whatever you feel like all you have to do is confess and walk away without a ticket.

We are just people! We have families, go to church, and do all the things other people do. We generally don’t care where you’re from what you were doing or where you’re going. Your personal business is yours and personal and of no concern to us. I don’t have time to “target” anyone, as most of the time I can’t see the drivers face and really don’t care who’s driving. Don’t like to go the speed limit? Change the law! Want to smoke weed? Change the law! Otherwise standby to standby! We are the enforcers of society. When you disrespect the officer your disrespecting society! Kill and officer and you are killing society.

No man is above the law and no man is below it: nor do we ask any man's permission when we ask him to obey it.
Theodore Roosevelt

I really enjoyed reading your blog. I do believe you speak the truth. I know for a fact there are cities in AL that have quotas for their police dept. I do believe it is to make sure the officer is doing there job, and not always to just hand out tickets to everyone on the street. I know there are many good officers out there. I work along side many of them. I am not an officer myself, but I have thought about it. I work in a sister field. There are good people and bad people everywhere out there. And to just lump them in to one category and say all policemen are bad. Well, that is just ignorance. I commend you on all your hard work. I hope that one day we will see a change for the good. And, then maybe people will realize you are out there to help, protect and serve. AMEN

BPDMotor6, you nailed that one. Every profession has a few that never should have been allowed to get where they are. Your comments are spot-on. Enjoyed it.

I agree with you 100%, I know that under certain circumstances cop's don't give ticket's. I was stopped several weeks ago and it was for speeding, which ordanirally I don't do,( I can't afford a ticket ) the cop asked me did I know how fast I was going, I startedto tell him a lie, but I thought better of it and told him the truth, I didn't know my mind was a million miles away. When he found out I had never had a ticket he just told me to slow it down a little and sent me on my way minus the ticket. On the other hand like you said there are some bad ones. I filled out a police report on some stolen jewelry, when I showed the guy my drivers license to showing I was who I said I was. I had a Georgia licenses, the reason I had not changed them is because I worked in Georgia and I was there at least 5 sometimes 7 day and nights a week. The cop ask me why I had not switched them? I told him I was never here mon. thru fri. This was on a sunday. I called the people I was working for and took mon. off that week and went and got my licenses switched, sure enough he pulled me over like I thought he would he walked up to my car and gave me a big grin and asked for my license, I ask him what I had done wrong as I handed him my licenses he lost his grin and told me it was a routine license check which we both knew was a lie. They don't have routine checks in Weaver. He pulled me over twice more for no reason. The third time I told him the next time he pulled me over that I had better be breaking the law and get a ticket or I was going to have his badge and somebody else would have his jo

I agree there are good and bad cops. For the good ones doing there jobs, keep it up. For the bad ones, I think the good ones should investigate them and get them out of their position. Then cops would only have a bad name to criminals anyway

Let me ask you this?if you knew someone was driving to work let's say without a driver license, but not for something stupid like a DUI,TO MANY TICKETS,OR A DRUG CONVICTION But for a medical suspension or revocation, and this person was just trying their best to get to work an make a living, and providing they had no choice, would you stop them and right them a ticket? And also don't you guy's have total discretion when it comes to arrests and ticket writing?Stay safe Bro,God bless,JAMEZZZ

Ok, YES and NO. We do have a "VERY" little discretion. I take each case on an individual basis. In the case you just meantioned I would want to know about the medical problem. Let's say the person is prone to seizures, he doesn't need to be driving! Let's say he hasn't had one in years, and has to feed his family, well, it's hard to prove what I did or did not see! And if you know when he goes to work or comes home, maybe I can't be in that area at that time.OR I might coincidently find myself on his street everyday at that time! Life is strange! Personally I would weight the need of the person vs, the safety of the public and adjust accordingly! Does that help at all? Or did I just muddy the water more?Remember, not all of my brother have the same sensibility or feelings.

23 year veteran police officer.I am a father of two and grandfather of three. I love to poke fun at things that need to be examined. My favorite sayings are: Don't sweat the little stuff and try not to think too much. As a police officer, if you don't get complained on once in awhile you're not doing your job! I have already been there, done that, got the scars, tee shirt and coffee cup!
