I read a blog today from a person struggling to make ends meet. Sound familiar? As I read I remembered my adventures in Kosovo right after the war ended there. I was working as a guard at the Pristina Hospital. The conditions I saw there haunt me to this day! It’s a wonder anyone made it out of there alive. I met two little girls who would come outside in the evening and visit with me. The first girl pushed the wheelchair, she had one leg. The second girl had no legs, they relied on each other to get around. The first little girl couldn’t get any crutches and wheel chairs were even harder to come by. The first little girl had watched as her whole family was shot to death. The missed killing her and left her for dead. The second little girl was marking the family fields for mines when she lost her legs. Mines have safeties that only let them explode if so much weight is applied, well someone took the safety off! These two little girls had nothing! And I do mean NOTHING! Noting but each other and the dreams all little girls share all over the world, to grow up and be happy someday.

Several months later I was investigating a body in a field when I realized I was standing in a mine field. They were plentiful! While I stood there for what seemed like days, I thought about my life and those two little girls. I lot of stuff will run through your mind at a time like that! And I thought about my humble little home in America. How it didn’t seem like much there, but if I had it over here it would seem like a castle! I made it out f the mind field Ok but I was changed forever. I never looked at things the same way again. I thought about the parable of the sparrow and how God provides for the sparrow, how much more he love me and how much more will he provide for me. I realized at that moment he had always taken care of me! Like the story about the foot prints in the sand, he had been carrying me! I still don’t have a lot by some standards, I struggle to make ends meet, some times they do sometimes they just come within sight of each other. But I always have what I need! NEEDS vs WANTS! I WANT a mansion, I NEED shelter! I WANT Perrier, I NEED safe clean drinking water. I WANT nice suits, I have clean clothes!  I smile now when I thing about those little girls and wonder what they are doing and what has become of them. I also smile when I think how much God has blessed me with!

I hear people scream about illegals taking “OUR JOBS!” The jobs they do most of us wouldn’t! That’s how they got them in the first place! I have seen the third world up close and personal, and I won’t judge anyone for trying to escape! This is the greatest country on Earth! While I was in Kosovo I heard some of the other workers from other countries taking about the bad attitudes most Americans have (and we do!) they couldn’t see me and I just listened. After a few minutes my Russian partner walked up to the group and heard them and just shook his head, and said,” You all talk so bad about Americans, but each one of you would sell your mother and grandmother to be one! Now get back to work~!” and without a sound they all looked at each other, shrugged, and went back to work. I am blessed, I maybe poor, but I’m poor in the richest country in the world! We worry about who we should vote for in the elections, AT LEAST WE HAVE ELECTIONS! And we don’t have to worry about being shot if we vote for the wrong person! Sometimes it’s just a matter of perspective and something to help focus it! God bless America, and keep blessing me!

I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.

I'm getting just about sick of pastors politicking from the pulpit. I have no problem with people expressing the political views and interest but not on some jobs. I am a police officer and have worked in cities with horrible political situations. I had dozens of people come up to me a day and speak ugly about the mayor and attempt to get me to express my personal opinion. I never did while I was in uniform or on duty no matter how badly I wanted to. You see there is a time and a place for everything. As a minister you have a job to do and the pulpit is your office. Your job is preaching the world of God, educating the flock and saving the lost. NOT expressing personal opinion or furthing your own agenda. I fear some have sold their souls and are using the pulpit as a money making scheme or an attempt at gaining power. Woe unto anyone who has! You have accepted a huge responsibility and politics is not in anyway part of it.

We have separation of church and state to prevent the state from instituting a religion but there isn't anything to prevent religion from entering politics. I do not believe you can legislate morality nor should we. I do not believe in forcing my religious views on anyone nor do I want yours forced on me. If you want to change the character and morals of this world the fastest and best way to do it is to live your faith. Don't snow me, show me! Show me your faith by living it everyday.

Give unto the lord that which is the lord and unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. It’s God’s house and the lord's pulpit , let’s give it back to him!

Peace~

If we had more hell in the pulpit, we would have less hell in the pew.

I have read a lot of police bashing in here recently and feel a strong need to set the record straight. Yes there are a few of my brothers and sisters in arms who have Absolutely NO business wearing a badge much less carrying a gun! I admit this openly and up front! They have exceptionally poor attitudes. I know doctors who have really bad  bed side manner that doesn’t make them any less a doctor. Just jerks with a lot of medical knowledge! The vast majority of my associates are decent, honest and hard working people who are simply doing a job. I personally got into law enforcement to make a difference and be a decent shining light. Well, it’s my dream and everyone needs one.  Why is it people HATE the police and LOVE firemen? Because firemen don’t make you do things you don’t want to do and cost you money when you decide you’re not doing to follow the rules or that they simply don’t apply to you.

First, WE (police officers) don’t make the rules! (laws) We just enforce them. We don’t even have the option of picking and choosing which ones we like or want to enforce. Second, most of us hate writing tickets! The only thing I hate worse is cleaning up dead bodies at a wreck scene! But I have learned that if I am writing tickets in a high wreck area, wrecks tend to drop dramatically! WHY? Because people will start paying attention if I’m there. Generally, I only go to an area to write tickets if, A. I have been order to do it by a supervisor or B. I’m tired of cleaning up wrecks at that spot!

NO! I do not have a quota, my Chief says I can write all the tickets I want! I have worked for a department where I did have quotas (Bessemer PD) but most decent departments don’t push their officers to write tickets. My personal policy is not everyone needs a ticket, but some people do! Example, I stopped a person the other day for running a stop sign. This person did not even attempt to slow down! When I got him stopped he pretended to have no knowledge of anything, and claimed the reason he failed to stop is because he did not normally take that route. I’m sorry but no matter which road you travel a stop sign is still a stop sign and means the same thing on all roads! This person NEEDED a ticket! But, by contrast, I stopped a person for traveling a little over the speed limit. As soon as he stopped he immediately admitted his mistake and repented! It’s a little difficult to write someone a ticket in this case as this is all a ticket is for to begin with! NOW, that’s not to say if you go around doing whatever you feel like all you have to do is confess and walk away without a ticket.

We are just people! We have families, go to church, and do all the things other people do. We generally don’t care where you’re from what you were doing or where you’re going. Your personal business is yours and personal and of no concern to us. I don’t have time to “target” anyone, as most of the time I can’t see the drivers face and really don’t care who’s driving. Don’t like to go the speed limit? Change the law! Want to smoke weed? Change the law! Otherwise standby to standby! We are the enforcers of society. When you disrespect the officer your disrespecting society! Kill and officer and you are killing society.

No man is above the law and no man is below it: nor do we ask any man's permission when we ask him to obey it.
Theodore Roosevelt

Extremisms bothers me. I don’t like the idea of anything or anyone that can not take into account the other side of the coin or simply doesn’t care about it. I hear so much these days about “change” and the need for it but seriously has anything changed in the last ten years beside gas prices? I hear a lot of, “ conservative values”, “old fashion values”. Well slavery is and old fashion conservative value, but I don’t want to go back to it! Thanks anyway! Denying women the vote! There’s you and OLD fashion conservative value! Want that one back? Me either!! Who decided GOD was a GOP? I’m tired of having the flag waved in my face and being told if I don’t follow this party or that I don’t love my God or my country and my feet stink! Sorry but that’s extremism! The nationalist fervor that has gripped the GOP scares me to death. The last time I saw this there were swastikas and book burnings!

And before you start thinking I’m some crazy GOP bashing Demo/ Lib I’m not! I think a person should have to work to eat! The only people that should be given a helping hand are those too young or too old to help themselves! We owe or children and elders that much! I believe in free choice, but I believe there are consequences for your actions! Everyone will be judged for his or her actions but not by me and not by YOU! I do not believe in abortion! But I believe morality can not and should not be legislated! I was made sick to my stomach the other day when I saw a van go by with the sickest pictures of aborted fetus’ on the side of it! To the owner, You should be arrested! I don’t want my four year old grand daughter to have to witness that abomination! YOU are an extremist! All you are going to do is cause the pro-abortion people to point a finger and say, “ Look how sick that person is!” put it on a hand out and hand it out at the abortion clinic! Where it might do some good ! Common sense is not as common as it should be!

I think most people are also non-extremist. I think most people, if they are honest are moderates. Conservative about some issues and liberal about others. It doesn’t have to be an ALL OR NOTHING deal. There are two sides to every issue and if you refuse to look at the other side you are probably and idiot extremist like van lady! The best way to move your faith forward is for YOU to live it! don’t talk the talk, just walk the walk! It will speak far louder than you can. The person who has had the most impact on my life never knew it! He never spoke about this believes, he just lived them everyday! And I saw and was moved! Thank you James “Jimmy” Barnett! I was watching!

I am a Christian and I do not recall Christ forcing anyone to follow him! Any religion that has to be forced on someone is not worth following! Any religion that thinks strapping a bomb on a mental challenged woman and blowing her up is acceptable makes me sick! That is extremism! Any religion that says you must be killed for questioning it makes me wonder if it has any merit. I believe we as a nation have been “puddin’ ized”. I think PC has gone too far! I believe we as a nation have the right to defend ourselves again terrorist and EXTREMIST! But I do not believe it is our job to force anyone to accept our way of life. Not everyone can truly handle freedom or wants it. Some people, I call them SHEEPLE want to be told what to do , what and how to think and when not to think. Live your freedom like your faith and they will come!

Let’s face it there really isn’t a nickels worth of difference between the major political parties except the way they force themselves upon us. None of them are really going to “save us” from anything or anybody. I really haven’t seen a politician I could believe in since Reagan and he was a little scary! He just managed to surround himself with some very gifted people and time mellowed some of our feeling about him.

I leave you with this parting thought, “ Blind faith in anything or anybody will get you killed!” just make sure what you believe in is right and just!

Peace~!

I moved to Inverness five and a half years ago to escape Bessemer politics. I knew I was doing the right thing and was making a better life for myself. I never would have guessed how much better things could be until I got here. I have the best kept roads in the world! No joke! Where else in the world do they resurface the same street every two years? NO WHERE! Since I have been here U.S. 280 from the Cahaba Rvier bridge to Wal-Mart has been paved three times! You heard me correctly! THREE TIMES! They come by every two years and scape about an inch of asphalt up and replace it, taking several months in the process. Now some of my more jealous friends who live in Jefferson County complain that they cant get streets paved, well I say too bad! Oh surely the county commission in Jefferson County could redirect unspent funds into some ones pocket if they wanted to but NO! They want to fight about domes and entertainment districts instead of important things like roads.

I don't care how much money the Shelby County commission  waste or lines in whoevers pocket is needed to see that I drive on the best possible roads! Having just recently bought my car tag and seen how insane the price was, I truly believe I deserve that kind of service in road management! Some people say no road on earth could possibly need that much work. Well, it doesn't! So what! It never has so much as a crack but that's not important, the point is it will never crack cause it's so well maintained! Oh they could have spent the money fixing the traffic flow problem but then I would have to drive on ...normal roads! I don't think so!

SO to the Shelby County commission, or who ever is responsible, I say waste on! Rob rape and pillage if you must but keep me in the roads to which I have become acustom! And as for the whiners in Jefferson County, get over it! You can come over and ride on my road on Sundays when I 'm not using it!

23 year veteran police officer.I am a father of two and grandfather of three. I love to poke fun at things that need to be examined. My favorite sayings are: Don't sweat the little stuff and try not to think too much. As a police officer, if you don't get complained on once in awhile you're not doing your job! I have already been there, done that, got the scars, tee shirt and coffee cup!
